You can wet the stone to get a general feel for what the color will be. After you wet-sand it, let it dry, and then apply the oil... that's when the true colors will show. After the oil, you put on a layer of wax to seal it in.
The first dolphin pic I put up was just wet. The second had the oil and wax. I'm not sure what kind of oil it was but the wax was bees wax.
